The painting of flowers and birds is more than only a decorative art. It is the union of the objective and the subjective world, the fusion of ones own feeling and view of nature.
In the eye of the artist everything in nature possesses feelings. For him the highest state of perception is “heaven and man are one”.
The artist does not try to copy reality but to recreate it at his own conception. Every stroke of the brush possesses its own individuality. The spirit of the artist is expressed by it. His flowers and birds are his own creation. Parallels to the philosophy of Zen can be found here.
The attempt to form our life creatively on the Zen-path is realized by the Sumi-e artist with paper, ink and brush.
