Sumi-e-master Massao Okinaka was born in 1913 in Kyoto, Japan and passed away in 2000 in Sao Paolo, Brazil. At the age of 15 he became a student of the Japanese master “Onishi Kakyo” of the Shijo School.

After emigrating to Brazil he taught the Art of Sumi-e for 50 years at the Institute of Japanese Culture in Sao Paolo. He also impressed as an aquarellist and oil-painter.

For his work as missionary of Japanese culture in South America he was decorated with the Cross of the Legion of Honour. With his decease the world lost one of the last authentic Sumi-e-masters of present time.
