Learning
Sumi-e painting is more than an art –
it is the path to peace and harmony.
Everyone who loves nature can learn this noble art, not only artists. Basic knowledge in painting or drawing is not required.
This is teaching and learning that comes from the heart and can only be offered by a master of sumi-e.
As with every Japanese art form (or martial art) techniques are learnt by imitating the original. The focus is more on the activity than on the result.
Sumi-e painting is also a form of meditation and has a positive therapeutic effect on stress, anxiety and illness.
Teaching
When I arrived in Berlin in 2001 sumi-e was virtually unknown. By giving public painting demonstrations I was able to attract interest in this fascinating art form. I currently teach a growing number of students from all parts of society and of all ages (from 13 to 70).
Two-hour classes with small groups are held once a week.

Courses take place at my workshop in Berlin – Charlottenburg, Nithackstr. 6
In my experience every student has a different motivation and abilities and only individual teaching produces quick results. In order to find out more about sumi-e painting you are welcome to come for a trial lesson.
The basic course teaches techniques by copying well-known motifs from Japanese ink-wash works. If students are interested they can follow this up by painting flowers, birds and landscapes (suiboku-ga).
I am keen to encourage students to paint local motifs in the hope of giving this noble art a new home in Germany.
Students from other cities or regions are welcome to come for a one-day or one-week course.
